4th Anti-Gay Incident Reported at Georgetown University

By: unknown

SUMMARY
The fourth anti-gay incident has been reported to have occurred in Georgetown University.
On October 23rd a female student was attacked by two men for her perceived sexual orientation. They yelled anti-gay slurs at her, grabbed her bag, threw her on the floor, and hit her with her bag, before they f
fled.

There were also two previous anti-gay occurrences, but details have yet to be released.
At 12:30 AM on Monday morning, a female student told campus she was verbally harassed by four males.

On Friday October 30th, over 50 Georgetown students rallied to support any gay students attending their school, and those harassed for being perceived gay.
Many students in the march said they hoped this would encourage students to be more open about anti-gay incidents, but for the incidents to stop occurring at all.

While their last wish hasn’t come true, their first wish has.
OPINION
I personally thought the article was decent. It was short and somewhat bland, but got to the point. As for the topic itself I find it extremely ignorant for people to not learn the concept to each his own, and extremely sad that we live in a place that is known for being “The Land of the Free”, yet we are still discussing whether or not someone should really act like themselves. I also find it rude and annoying that someone thinks they have the right to harass someone, and scar them physically and/or emotionally, because they thought they may possibly stand for something that they themselves don’t.

New jihad code threatens al QaedaBy Nic Robertson and Paul Cruickshank, CNNNovember 10, 2009 10:29 a.m. EST

SUMMARY
For the past two years Noman Benotman, a former Jihad for the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) and Safi al Islam al Gadhafi, the son of former Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, have been meeting secretly to create a Jihad code
The Jihad are a group of Muslims who fight for Allah/God. For the past 20 years, Osama Bin Laden and other members of Al-Queda, have recruited the Jihad to grow their military strength.

The main reason so many Jihads have sided with Al-Queda, is because they tend to follow Shar’ia, in the Islamic holy book, the Quran.

Benotman, is a former Jihad, and worked his way up Al-Qaeda’s ladders. He became a top Jihad leader, and worker closely with Osama Bin-Laden, until one day

“…Felt it was wrong. I believe he (Bin-Laden ) is a Muslim, but I don’t agree with his actions. “

Of course, no one believed him. Here was a man who worked with the terrorist organization for 10 years.

He did however find someone who believed him, Safi al Islam al Gadhafi.

The twist is Gadhafi and Benotman used to hate each other, because Benotman was part of the group that tried to kill Gadhafi’s father. However, after putting aside their differences they devised for a way to control the Jihad, and generally violent ways.

Despite their differences, the two both agreed that killing an Al-Queda leader would just be a chance for another one to come in. So instead they decided making a new set of rulers, based on the Quran, and using prisoners who used to be Jihads to carry them out would be the most efficient ways.

So for two years they worked with the Jihadi government and the Libyan government and created a new 400 page code.

One revolutionary line
"...We used to encourage armed struggle; we now realize it is illegitimate."

They hope this will discourage youths from joining the group. This is also what America has been waiting for. A way to weaken Al-Qaeda forces by dissecting it from the inside out.

OPINION
The article had no biases, and was well-written. The topic was interesting, and if the average American were to read it, it would probably give them some up-lifting knowing that we as a global community have a slight upper-hand in the fight against terrorism.

Drop in Thanksgiving Ticket Travels

Summary:

The Airline Industry Trade group predicts that passenger traffic over Thanksgiving holiday will drop four percent from last year. The Air Transport Association Made the forecast Monday despite deep discounting by airlines over the past several months. Ten percent uneployment rate last month has effected consumer buying decisions. U.S. Airlines has struggled this year with declining traffic during the ressession. They cut fairs for the peak Summer vacation season and have eliminated many unprofitable flights to save money.

Critiques:

I believe that this was an interesting article. Are economy is in a slum and something like ticket sales shows it. Honestly if i was tight on money i wouldn't buy plan tickets for me or my family to go somewhere for a few days. I think people are realizing what's important in their lives.

These arrests were the result of joint efforts by the Sponsylvania and Stafford Cheriffs' Office. Two young men used phony $100 American Express traveler's checks to buy pieces of candy and other inexpensive items. Then they pocketted the extra change. Antonio Wilcocks (20 years old) and Anthony Sidbury (20 years old) were both charged with nearly 70 offenses, including forgery, passing forged documents, conspericy, and containing money by false pretenses. Ericka Shorter (18 years old) and Angela ShorterItalic (43 years old) were charged with more than 30 offenses. All four suspects were placed in Rapahannock Regional Jail.

Critiques:

I like how this article was straight forward with most of the imformation. One thing that was bad about it was that they didn't mention two out of the four people til the end of the article which was a little odd.

Abortion doctor slaying suspect reconciles actions

Abortion doctor slaying suspect reconciles actions
by: Roxana Hegeman
Nov 10,2009
Summary: This article is about a how a doctor killed an abortion doctor for the protection of the unborn babies. Scott Roeder killed the doctor because he feels that killing an innocent baby that is defenseless is not the right thing to do. He felt that it was the right thing to do and that he had to show how he felt n this subject. He is not afraid to speak out on this subject.

Critique: The headline of the article makes you believe that the doctor is apologizing for his actions, but he is doing the absolute opposite. The article makes the doctor look like a heartless person, for killing another doctor. The headline gives you the wrong idea.

Abortion doctor slaying suspect reconciles actions--By Roxana Hegeman--November 10, 2009

Abortion doctor slaying suspect reconciles actions--By Roxana Hegeman--November 10, 2009

Summary: Scott Roeder is currently in jail awaiting trial for shooting and killing abortion provider, Dr. George Tiller. Yesterday he confessed to the slaying, saying he did it to protect the lives of unborn children. Pro abortion groups consider men like Roeder terrorists.

Critique: The article mentions Roeder's charged with first degree murder and two counts of aggrivated assault for threatening two ushers, who are mentioned only once. The article includes nothing about their health and little else about the attack itself. Also, the article is biased against Roeder, starting off by describing him as "defiant and unapologetic." The article includes a few quotes from the suspect, but then spends the last two-fifths of the article explaining how people think he is a terrorist and that other people have used his defense and failed.

School Sued in Online Photo Controversy

By the Associated Press

Two girls are suing the Ohio school board for punishing them for pictures taken over the summer.

According ACLU ( The American Civil Liberties Union), the school board invaded the girls right to free speech, after they were banned from school sports for the year, and were forced to apologize to an all-male coaches' board and undergo counseling, after take sexually suggestive pictures of themselves.

The pictures somehow leaked to the school’s administrators, and the they took action against the girls claiming it looked bad on the school for their pupils to be seen like this. There is one catch, no one would have ever know who these girls were, or what school they were from, by viewing the pictures alone. This is where ACLU comes in.

The ACLU, claims that since the pictures had nothing to with the school, the girls shouldn’t be punished for expressing themselves. The school sees it different. Both girls play on sports, and the school doesn’t want them to be representations of the school. The ACLU claims, that many teenagers take pictures of themselves in compromising positions, and as times change, and as the internet connects people more and more, they will have to accept that.

It’s a back and forth argument, but it all boils down to how far should the term “Freedom of Speech” go, and when, if they do, should the schools get involved.

Opinion
Overall, I believe the article was well written, and it didn't seem the writer(s) had any bias towards on side. I also liked that the author mentioned other similar cases, to show how wide-spread the current internet-effecting-school epidemic is.

Weakened Ida still promises torrential rain on Gulf Coast-Nov 10,2009

Weakened Ida still promises torrential rain on Gulf Coast
by: Melissa Nelson
nov 10,2009
Summary: The article was about how the hurricane has slowed down but its still dangerous and how people should stay out of the
water. The hurricane is near the mouth of the Mississippi River and it will probably flood it. The military is advising everyone to take
precautions and for people who live in mobile homes to go to better place for safety.

Critique: This article jumps from subject to subject. It doesn't tell what the scientists think and predict what is going to happen. It
also doesn't have a lot of articles. The article also is not very precise and it doesn't seem like it is sure of what it is saying.

Public H1N1 clinic scheduled--by Jim Hall--November 10, 2009

Public H1N1 clinic scheduled--by Jim Hall--November 10, 2009

Summary: More swine flu vaccines are on their way. Pratt Medical center started giving public vaccinations of the swine flu vaccine yesturday and more doses are to come with two more school clinics later this week.

Critique: The article repeats itself yet doesn't give any new information. At the beginning it mentions two more school based clinics, and repeats the fact again, only never once does it give a time or a place for these two clinics. Also, the article never mentions where these extra doses are coming from, just that they're there.

Woman faces charges in animal-cruelty case

Woman faces charges in animal-cruelty case
by: The Associated Press
Nov 10,2009
Summary: This article is abut how a woman is facing charges for animal cruelty. Many pet owners had said they had grown concerned because they had seen animal carcasses in her backyard. There were also five dogs and a cat in cramped cages and they looked like they suffered from maltreatment. The women was released without bail following her arrest on Saturday.

Critique: This article takes a minute to get started and they talk about her arrest at the end of the article.. They should tell that information at the beginning of the story and have more quotes.

Public H1N1 clinic scheduled-Nov 10,2009

Public H1N1 clinic scheduled
by:Jim Hall
Nov 10,2009
Summary: This article is about how Pratt Medical Center is offering swine flu shots for high risked patients. They will have both ways you can take the vaccine. There is the injection way and the nose spray that you spray up your nose. They are giving people who are at high risks to get Swine Flu the chance to b e vaccinated. One of the sites will be in Fredricksburg Lafayette Upper Elementary School. The other is at Spotsylvania at Spotsylvaia High School.

Critique: This article is about how medical center scheduled vaccinations but then it goes on talking about how the clinics are really for people who are at high risk of getting H1N1. This article jumps from subject to subject and it barely has any quotes. Quotes make an article better and if they had more quotes the article would be more interesting.

Scheduled executions stirs memories
by:David Dishneau
Nov,10

Summary: This article is about how the sniper from seven years ago is having his death sentenced tonight. John Allen Muhammad
is the name of the sniper who caused so much fear and grief in the people of VA and MD. His death sentence is sentenced to be
tonight at 9:00 and he is to be lethally injected. The sentecing of his death had brought fear and grief back in people.

Critique: This article drifts so much from the subject of the article. The article is about how the senticing of Muhammad's death is
supposed to bring back fear. In the article there are so many quotes. They also tell who died and when it happened. The article was
an okay article. It could've been better by not having so many qoutes and by sticking to the subject of the article.

Stafford parks measure approved by voters--By Aaron Richardson--November 4, 2009

Summary: In elections on Tuesday, November 3rd, voters in Stafford county approved of borrowing $29 million to improve parks. This money will be used to build various athletic facilities, from baseball complexes to rectangular fields (for soccer and such).

Critique: This article mentions different sports it intends to spend money on like baseball and rectangular fields, as well as mentions sports that need improved facilities like swimming. However, while the article mentions the need for a better swim facilities, it does not mention how it intends to deal with and fix the problem of only one year round swimming pool. The paragraphs were a good length, neither too long nor too short.

Civil War museum leaving Spostsylvania for the city--by Dan Telvok--November 4, 2009

Summary: Terry Thomann, director of the Civil War museum announced Tuesday, November 3rd that he plans to close the Southpoint I center and open a store in Fredricksburg. Support in the community was not what Thomann expected and so he plans to move his museum to Fredericksburg in a three part process in hopes of better business.

Critique: In the middle of the article, the topic changes from discussion of the Civil War museum to a Confederacy museum and back to plans for the new Civil War museum. Also, in the sixth paragraph, it starts talking about something Vakos said, though the only thing we know about him is that he has a Courthouse Village named after him.

Four charged in bogus-check scam

Four charged in bogus-check scam
By Keith Epps
November 9th, 2009

Four people who were cashing phony checks were arrested over the weekend in Fredericksburg. The Spotsylvania and Stafford county sheriffs worked together to catch the criminals. The criminals used phony $100 American Express cards to buy various inexpensive iterms then would pocket the change left on the cards. The criminals were caught at the Walmart and were taken into custody. All of the suspects face numerous charges including forgery, passing forged documents, and other charges. The suspects were places in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

Critique
This article goes into alot of detail about how exatcly the criminals committed the crime which may lead to a copying of the crime. The story should include less details about how the crime was done and more on the consequences for committing the crime in order to prevent a repeat of the offense.

The article was well written but did not have a interview from the freshman Manuel or from the head coach. It also included information about Florida States record and what was at stake for the young quaterback to acheive.

Oil hits $80 mark, then falls back

Oil hits $80 mark, then falls back
By the Associated Press
November 9th, 2009

Oil prices jumped to $80 a barrel yesterday. This is due to the weakened U.S. dollar and hurricane Ida. The price also increased becuase the euro pushed past the $1.50 level for the equivelance of a dollar for the first time which sent the oil price even higher. Once Ida had been declared a tropical storm instead of a hurricane the price of oil dropped back down from $80 dollars by the afternoon.

Critique
The author includes some information that does not pertain directly to the topic of the oil prices rising like the December delivery of oil. That detracts from the main focus of the article. The author also uses imprecise and vague language which leaves the reader questioning the precise amounts. An examply is when the author says that the, "prices eased back," the language is a bit ambiguous and does not clearly state how much the prices was lowered.

It's alive! End-of-life counseling is in bill--Washington (AP)--October 30, 2009

Summmary: A provision for Medicare to pay for voluntary end-of-life counseling is in the latest Democratic health care bill, unveiled Thursday October 29. It raised suspicion and anger, even thought doctor's groups and the AARP support it.

Critique: This article doesn't say who became suspicious and angry, though it can be assumed to be the people against this provision. It mentions the Republican view only once, and that's only though a quote describing the counseling as "death panels." Also, the article does not get more specific about when the provision was suggested beyond "this summer."

Cheifs lose interest in Larry Johnson

Summary:
Kansas Cheifs running back Larry Johnson was released yesterday after coming back from a two day suspension. Larry Johnson was a pro bowl back in 2005 and 2006 rushing for more than 1,700 each of those seasons. This year in seven games he is only averaging 2.7 yards per carry and has had a lot of problems off the field including going on twitter and talking bad about the Cheifs fans and the kansas head coach. He has also involved the coach in some gay slurs.

Critique:
The article was good, it was short and straight to the point. They could have put in a interview from Larry Johson but besides that it was a good article.

CRITQUE:
Thats so Strange I actually went to look it up on facebook to see if it was true or not. It was and it said exactly that. Its strange how people would do that. And yet not be considered hacking.

Furniture store to open next to mall

Furniture store to open next to mall
By Cathy Jett
November 9th, 2009

Arhaus, a furniture store, will open July 1st in The Village at Towne Center. It will be about 15,000 square feet in the new open air sections of the Spotsylvania Towne Centere. The furniture store is under the ownership of the Walton Hills, which has over 30 other retail locations. Arhaus is the latest addition to The Village which already includes various other stores.

Critique
The aritcle speak very briefly about the new furniture store and seems to focus more on the other stores in The Village. This distracts from the main focus of the article, the new furniture store.

Fed: Only GMAC needs more help

Fed: Only GMAC needs more help
The Associated Press
November 9th, 2009

The Federal Reserve said yesterday that GMAC is the onle one of 19 stress tested banks that needs more money to withstand a future downturn. This is because GMAC has been unable to raise the suffiecient amount of money it needed. The federal government said that the company is expected to repay the loans. The amount of money that is going to be given is still being discussed.

Critique
The article is a little brief and does not delve very deeply into the issue of the bank and its need for money. For a short notice however it does accomplish the goal of informing the reader of the money problem.

Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?

CNN

By Elizabeth Landau,

SUMMARY:

This year studies have showed that there is a U.S. cancer researcher's warning drew wide attention, more evidence is emerging that long-term cell phone use is associated with cancer, but there's still not a definitive explanation or proof of cause and effect. Dr. Ronald Herberman, the director of the university of Pittsburgh cancer institute, issued a warning, listing steps to avoid harmful electromagnetic radiation from a cell phones he said to keeps phones away from children unless an emergency. He also said that it would lead people to a 30 percent more chance of getting a tumor or brain cancer.

CRITIQUE:

I am honestly not sure if this is true or not because so far people have said some of the strangest things cause cancer like a toothbrush. I mean really a toothbrush? I do however think the article was well written. I'm just not sure all the facts are true.

Hall scrap under review

A incident happened on the Atlanta sideline that involved Redskins cornerback Deangelo Hall and Atlanta head coach Mike Smith. Deangelo Hall was interviewed and said that Smith put his hands on him in a harmful way shortly after Chris Horton (Redskins safety) hit Matt Ryan out of bounds. Coach of the redskins Jim Zorn and other deangelo hall teammates say that they are fully behind Hall's story. Jim Zorn said he was proud of Deangelo for keeping his composure on the sideline.

Crtique
I think the article should have tryed to interview the Atlanta head coach and some of the Atlanta players that also saw the incident to get both sides of the story. The article was very bias making it seem like the Falcons were wrong and interviewing only redskins players who would obviously be on Deangelos side.

Stroller hinge can cut off kids' fingers

Stroller hinge can cut off kids' fingers
By Natasha T. Metzler
November 9th, 2009

A million Maclaren strollers sold by Target and Babies "R" Us were recalled yesterday. There were 12 reports of children having their fingertips amputated by a hinge mechanism in the stroller. The recall includes several different models of the stroller. The danger is present when the stroller is being opened because an opening where the child could stick their finger and have it amputated. The companys is offering freee hinge covers to prevent future incidents.

Critique
The article is brief and concise and is lacking in emotion. It is an emotional subject when a child has their finger chopped off. By using the word amputated, the story seems critical and dispassionate. It does not seem to capture the severity of the strollers damage to the childs fingers.

Ovechkin injury report

Alex Ovechkin jokinling tells a reporter he was going to be out for a month where in fact he should be back in a week. Ovechkin had 14 goals and 23 points leading the team and was clearly the superstar for the Nationals. He practiced with a yellow non contact jersey yesterday and also peformed some wrist shots and a couple of slap shots. He said he didnt want to put too much pressure on his body to quickly. Ovechkin will miss the Nationals next game against the New York Islanders.

Critique
The article was well written providing enough facts about the injury and also interviewing the player about the injury. The article was a little long but provided the necessary information about the subject. They should of interviewed some of the players asking them about Ovechkins injury.

Iran threatens to put trespassing Americans on trial

The article talks abgout how three Americans were arrested on November 9, 2009 for crossing the Iran border. The Iran people think the hikers were american spys. President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadimejad, accused the U.S for imprisioning innocent Iranians and keeping them in American prisons. The president of Iran says the Americans have crossed the Iran border legally and they have the right to punish them.

Critique
I think the article could have been longer and filled with more information than it was. They also could have gotton more interviews such as the Americans who got arrested and our president to see how he was going to address the situation.

Kids, cell phones: What's right call?

The article dicusses how what is the appropiate age for children to have cell phones or if the should have them at all. Karen Odgen a licensed therapist says that the parents need to remind the children that the phone is a privelage not a right. Parents dicussed that one of the only reasons they got their child a phone was for peace of mind so they always know where there child is.

Critique
I think this was a well written article because it had interviews from the parents and also a therapist. I think the only thing that was wrong or could be improved with was that they did not have any interviews from the children that recieved the cell phones.

Thin Skins Feel The Pain

The Redskins currently last in their divison with the record of 2-6 after losing to the falcons on Sunday. The Skins have suffered injurys to a majority of the starters including Clinton Portis, Chris Cooley, Chris Samuels, Mike Williams, Chris Horton and Randy Thomas. Players on the team are dissapointed with their recent failure such as rookie Brian Orakpo. Orakpo who won a championship as a freshman at the University of Texas. He has never in his carear had a losing season besides being a Redskin.

Critique
The article could of included the recent position of Jim Zorn questions have risen if he will have a job at the end of the year. They could have included the teams that the Redskins have victorys agaisnt and also interview more players not Jim Zorn.

Sliding Giants must regroup

The New York Giants are suffering a four game losing streak dropping thei record to 5-4. They are currently thrid place in the NFC East behing Dallas (6-2) and Philadelphia (5-3). Last Sunday the Giants suffered their most heart breaking against the San Diego Chargers losing by one point 21-20. The Giants players still feel they can go to the playoffs and possibly win the Championship.

Critique
The article was a bit long saying pretty much the same thing. The article should have said that the Giants were 10-6 the year they won the super bowl being the underdog to even go to the playoffs.

Blount will play Saturday

Oregon running back LeGarrete Blount was reinstaed November 9th, 2009 after being orginally suspended for punching Boise State player in the seaason opener. Blount will bot be starting for the Ducks and has moved down to be a third string running back. Starting freshman running back LaMicheal James has surpassed Blounts total rushing yards from last season with 1,043. James becomes the first Oregon freshman to rush over a 1000 yards in a single season.

Critique
The article was well written but could of included how Florida Gator Brandon Spikes only got suspended for one game after attempting to gauge out a players eyes at their last game. There was a lot of controversy circling the two decisons and should have been mentioned in the article.

D.C. Sniper Is to Be Executed on Tuesday

Title: D.C. sniper is to be executed on tuesday
Author: David Stout
Date: November 9, 2009

Summary:
This article talks about how the judicial process was being rushed because the death was placed so soon on tuesday for a leathal injection. Virginia has the nation's second-busiest death chamber, right behind Texas'. The upcoming death is for Mr. Muhammad; his 17 year old accompliss was placed under a life sentence in prison. The governor can intervene and stop the death tuesday and has agreed to review the case, but he signaled that he isn't inclined to intervene on his death.

Critique:
There aren't that many quotes used in the article from people, and this is basically just straight forward information without much substance. It's short and the reader would probably lose focus at the title because the words weren't strong enough to keep you reading. It was informative and a news article, but this could have been so much better.

New York Gay Rights Foe Sees Nuance in His Stand

Title: New York gay rights foe sees nuance in his stand
Author: Nicholas Confessore and Jeremy W. Peters
Date: November 9, 2009

Summary:
Senator Diaz, of New York, is one of the most outspoken opposers of gay marriage; he does not hate gay people though. Senator Diaz has two gay brothers, a gay granddaughter, and a good friend that he calls his "brother" which is gay. Mr. Diaz believes that there are more important issues to work on, and he believes that because the senate is not majority democrat that the people don't want gay marriage legalized just yet. Also, he says that in order for him to accept gays to get married, he'd have to turn his beliefs inside out, and he already accepts them. He just doesn't want to allow them to get married.

Critique:
This article had a good amount of quotes and they usually followed with what the article was taking about. I think that they clearly expressed both sides and explained as to why Senator Diaz does not want gay marriage to be legalized, and it helped me clearly understand his view on the possition. Over-all, I think this was a well written article.

The video of her multiple violent acts were found all over the web, and world wide news after the event. She apolygized, but many people find it unexcusable. She quotes, "I am deeply and wholeheartedly regretful for my actions, My actions were uncalled for. I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation. I take full responsibility for my actions and accept any punishment felt necessary from the coaching staff and UNM administration. This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player that I am. I am sorry to my coaches and teammates for any and all damages I have brought upon them. I am especially sorry to BYU and the BYU women's soccer players that were personally affected by my actions. I have the utmost respect for the BYU women's soccer program and its players."

Summary: a deer found itself inside alions den at the National Zoo, where it was chased by two female lions. It narrowly escaped into the moat of the exhibit, where zoo officials sedated it and took it to the animal hospital. The lion's caused to much damaged for it's life to be saved. The event was all caught on film.

Cristique: I think the writer should have put some quotes from the witnesses, seeing as to it was caught on film and numerous people watched it occur. other than that, i thought that it was a good notation of a neat news event.

Capitals Ovechkin out for two weeks

Capitals ovechkin out for two weeks
By: Joseph White

SUMMARY:
Alex Ovechkin has the most serious injury of his NHL career he has a "upper body strain" He quotes "everyone gets injuries, every player gets hurt, I'm lucky nothings broken" he's only missed four games, only two of which were due to injuries. He thinks his injury occurred during a large scrum that when Ovechkin and Jason Chimera bumped each other but the bump turned into a shove.

CRITIQUE:
I became a fan of the capitals when I met my friends step-dad who was probably one of their biggest fans. But over all i think was a well written article, it was descriptive and gave all the important information at the beginning of the article.

Gang Rape

Summary:

A 15 year old girl was gang raped outside Richmond High School in California. This happened outside the school's homecoming dance Saaturday night in suburban San Francisco. Authorities describe this as a two and an half hour assault. Only two teenage suspecta have been jailed, but more are expected by the police detectives. It's said that as many as 20 people were involved or stood and watched. There us a $20,000 reward for anyone who comes to the police with information that helps the arrests and gets convictions. There was 10 people involved in the assualt, while the other 10 people watched without calling the police to report it. The police don't have the ability to arrest those who stood there and said nothing because there is no specific law against it in California. The victim was found unconscious under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday, after police received a call. Someone had overheard the people at the assualt talking about the incident so she called the police and directed them to her. She was transported to the hospital in a helicopter and was in stable condition by Tuesday.

Critiques:

This article was very good and well written. It was sad when i was reading it because there was so many witnesses at the sene, but no one helped. It was said that no one helped her becaue it was gang related and people didn't want to speak up. It's like the people in the gang were controlling them. They didn't want anyone to speek up so no one did. the only reason the girl was found was because someone over heard people talking about it and called the police. It's amazing hoow everyone knew about it, but did absolutly nothing. It's a good thing she's alive though. I thihnk they should of wrote more about the victim and who found her. The only names that were mentioned were the police officers and the detectives, which no one really needed to know

Obama takes heat for skipping Berlin Wall anniversary - http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/11/06/obama-takes-heat-for-skipping-berlin-wall-anniversary/#more-76799

Summary

This Monday, November 9th 2009 Germany will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall. President Obama was expected to go to the commemoration, but due to an upcoming 10 day trip to Asia, he and his team have decided it is better for him to prepare for what is to be his most important trip this year. During his trip he is expected to visit Japan, Singapore, China and South Korea, to discuss trade, and other economic issues. This trip is also significant because he will get a chance to talk to Chinese officials, who are currently America's 2nd largest trading partner, and the largest holder of U.S government debts. Despite it's importance many people, especially Republic party representatives, and their supporters are outraged.

Rush Limbaugh said, "This is unprecedented...An American president not showing up at one of the most famous sites for the destruction of tyranny and the outbreak of freedom? Being invited by the chancellor, the leader of Germany, and not going?"

The Der Spiegel, a major German newspaper headline also stated, "Barack is too busy".

Despite the controversy, the President said Germany "has become the centerpiece for an extraordinarily strong European Union."

He also invited Germany's chancellor, Angela Markey, to the White House this past Tuesday.

Opinion
In my opinion, the article only showed the view of those in opposition of President Obama's decision, and the one person who supported him, Robert Gibbs, is part of the White House staff, and would have obvious preference to the President's decision. Also, the article failed to mention just how important his trip to Asia is to America's economic well-being. If one were not to search what his trip to Asia entitled, they would think that he was just skipping a very important event in not only Germany's history, but America's history as well. Overall, I believe the article was biased towards the Republican view on the matter, and did not show the full scope of the matter.
‘Favre shakes off boos, Vikings beat Packers 38-26’
Source: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/recap?gid=20091101009&prov=ap
Article by: Chris Jenkins
November 1st, 2009 (article publication date)

Summary: Famous NFL quarterback Brett Favre, now playing for the team he was most known for (the Packers) rival the Minnesota Vikings, shook off the crowds boos and played what some are saying was one of his best games last Sunday. The final score being 38-26, Vikings, it was a difficult loss for the Packers seeing as to they were on their own turf and playing against what many hardcore Packer fans are calling a ‘traitor’ (AKA Brett Favre). The Packers’ players and staff are hopeful for the next match against them comes later on, but are still sore from the depressing outcome of the game. However, most people will argue that even though the Packers lost, Rodgers was also on top of his game, completing the game with 261 pass yards compared to Favre who finished with 244.

Critique: I thought the article was pretty well written, and I liked how they showed both sides of the story as far as the issue when Favre was constantly booed and such. The author included enough about the actual game as well as the issue many people are talking about (Favre being a Viking).

John Allen Muhammad, masterming of the 2002 sniper attacks in the Wahsington D.C. area, that left 10 dead, asked the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday to stop his execution. It is said that his lawyer was incompetent and that he is mentally ill. If his mental illness defense passes then he cannot be excuted when he is scheduled to be, Novermber 10th at a Virginia prison. His case is still pending.

critique for the Naked Stafford.. and Sniper asks court...

Naked Stafford man hit by man
Critique
The article is written with too much colloquialism and is too informal with its references to "magic mushrooms" and other slang terms. The article is written with too much emphasis on the supposed personality of the naked boy instead of being objective about the incident.

Sniper asks court to block execution
Critique
The article plays to the sympathy of people depsite the fact that he killed ten people. Notenough emphasis is placed on the severity of his actions. The severity of his crime and the sympathy of his execution should be written in a way that correctly shows them.

Naked Stafford man hit by train

By: Keith Epps

A man on Moday night was running around naked and then got hit by a slow moving train. He was arrested afterwards. While in custody the naked boy admitted to have eaten "magic mushrooms" prior to the incident. A woman called in the incident because she saw the naked boy yelling at himself and screaming. After being hit by the train he was taken to the Stafford hosipital and recovered from his wounds. He was charged with indecent exposure, obstructing railroad operations, obstructing justice, trespassing on railroad property, being drunk in public, and four counts of assault and battery on a police officer.

Rare rail rides draw crowd.

Title: Rare rail rides draw crowd
Author: Jonas Beals
Date: November 2, 2009

Summary:
The Rappahannock chapter of the National Railway Historical Society began giving rides to the public to teach them about the railroad history and how the workers used to work back in the '30s and '40s. The cart that they were giving rides on was used to go and help with keeping the labor on the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac railroads running. The carts used to go up to 60 mph, but was only going between 10 and 20 mph with the passengers on board. The historical ride includes a caboose that the children were able to climb all over.

Critique:
I thought the article had a sufficient amount of quotes that commented on what they were saying, but I don't think the story was front-page worthy. It is a historical event, but I think that the article above it on the finish line of the results of the upcoming election is more important because it would give people their final decision on who to vote for. It could still be in the front, just not the main story with the huge pictures.

Stafford to replace old schools.

Title: Stafford to replace old schools
Author: Jeff Branscome
Date: November 2, 2009

Summary:
Stafford county is going to renovate and expand Ferry Farm elementary and either Falmouth or Grafton Village to make two schools big enough for 950 students and removing one school. The cost of building a new school and leaving these three up would be $21 million, where as the cost of renovating an existing school to this size would be between $6.6 million and $10 million. The school board has yet to decide where to relocate the students during the time of renovation over the next four years, though.

Critique:
The quotes were placed under the paragraph that the quote talks about, so they were all placed well. The language was easy to read and comprehendable. The article wasn't that interesting, but he did a really good job considering all he had to write was something like "three elementary schools renovate over four years."

43 Million People fell for fake Anti-virus Scam.

SUMMARY:
Up to about 43 million people could have given their bank account details to cyber criminals. 93 percent of the people scammed downloaded the program that was "supposedly suppose to fix their computer" The estimate is that some cyber criminals are making up to 1.4 million dollars a year from these scams. By downloading the software it will give the cyber criminals access to bank details and computer files. They say it is hard to track the criminals because the software may be developed in another country and the criminal may not be there. But they are ways to notice a fake site.

OPINION:
I think that this is absurd why would anyone believe somethings wrong with their computer be a pop-up screen. Criminals should not be making more money than a lot of people hence their criminals. But there are ways to know its a fake site but I'm not sure how anyone could believe that.

Baby Survives After Falling Under A Train

CNN
October 16, 2009

SUMMARY:
In Melbourne, Australia, a six month baby escaped his mother and rolled off a railway station platform into the path of an incoming train. It was a miracle that the baby survived with only a cut on the forehead. The mother and the baby were rushed to the hospital and soon released.

I think that this was a superior miracle! The baby only suffered a cut on the forehead thats amazing. But you never should let go of your stroller in a train station or face the stroller towards the platform.

Ford Recall Hits 4.5 Million Vehicles

Summary:
Tuesday was when Ford issued the biggest recall in its history. Because of a faulty switch, which was a fire hazard 4.5 million vehicles were alerted. This is said to be the eight recalls, involving a total of 16 million Ford vehicles. Ford is notifying their customers to take there vehicles to get a complimentary fix on the switch.

Critique:
I honestly would never buy a ford mainly because my family has had three fords and they all were no good. They have an Acronym for Ford. Found On Road Dead. Which happened to our last ford explorer; we had it for four years. I’m not surprised that Ford is having that many recalls. I personally think there cars stink.

The Backyard Prisoner

Summary:
Jaycee Dugard was abducted in South Lake Tahoe, in 1991 on her way to school. She was accidentally discovered in the bay area in 2009. Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender still on parole. Dugard was imprisoned for nearly 20 years in Garrido’s backyard. He raped her and fathered her children. His neighbors said he was a creep, not even his own family had anything good to say about him.

Critique:
People can be so disturbing, creepy, and it can be so shocking. He was on parole and would get visits from the parole officer. No one knew what was going on in his backyard. It’s crazy how her hid her back there for more nearly 20 years with no one even noticing, It’s so astounding that she lived like, was raped, and on top of that had his kids. It’s amazing how disgusting some people can be.

Military Sees Histoic Recruting Success

Summary:
The U.S. has met all of its annual recruiting goals. This is the first time in 35 years. Over hundreds of thousands of young people have enlisted in the military when they know they will most likely go to war. The military hasn’t seen something like this since the all volunteer was established in 1973. Most think the main cause of so many recruits is because of the economy, and the unemployment rate. The defense department brought in about 168,900 active-duty troops, or 103 percent for the year. For the National Guard and the reserve the goal reached over 104 percent.

Critique:
This sounds great for us because it means fewer jobs will need to be in demand. It’s great because the military pays for your schooling. It actually surprises me because I didn’t know that the military wasn't meeting it’s recruiting goals every year, but know that I think about it that must have been why there were so many commercials for the national guard.

DNA leads to suspect after 19 years

Summary:
Jennifer Schuett was sexually assaulted in 1990, at the age of 8. It has been 19 years and the FBI has finally found the assaulter. Dennis Earl Bradford, a 40 year old Welder was arrested Tuesday in Little Rock Arkansas. He was found due to a DNA date base from when he was arrested in Arkansas. Schuett was abducted from her bedroom, raped, and left for dead. She woke up in his arms; he had told her he was an undercover cop and knew her family. He later took her to a field near her elementary school and raped her. Then her cut her throat from ear to ear. It was said by doctors she would never talk again, but she did. She went on CNN to tell her story; she wanted to tell all the little girls out there to fight back.

Critique:
I believe this article is basically showing that if you fight for what you know is right everything will turn out ok. This young lady was fighting for 19 years trying to find this man who did horrible things to her, and in the end she succeeded. I think they could of put a little more information about the actually case, but it was a pretty good story.

Juveniles laughed after setting 15 year old on fire.

Summary:
Michael Brewer was burned over 80 percent; he suffered form second degree burns. Five juveniles were in custody Tuesday after allegedly burning Michael on purpose. Michael supposable owed one of the boys $40, then one boy stole his dad’s bike. Michael had an idea of who it was and reported it stolen and one of the juveniles went to a detention center. Where then his parents brought him home. Michael was waiting for a few friends when the five boys come up to him. They threw rubbing alcohol and used a lighter to set him on fire. When arrested some boys laughed; only one felt remorse.

Critique:
This story was sad, how could someone set another peron on fire. The scary thing is that only one actually felt sorry. I know i wouldn't be able to live with myslef if i set someone on fire, especially if it was on purpose. Over all, I think the article was well written and had some good straight forward facts.

Man held in assault, peeping Tom cases—October 9, 2009—By: Keith Epps

Man held in assault, peeping Tom cases—October 9, 2009—By: Keith Epps

Summary: On Thursday, Mario Arcos-Gonzalez was arrested and charged with burglary with the intent to commit assault, two counts of being peeping Tom, and indecent exposure. All the incidents took place at Townsend Square, between July and Wednesday night. A resident saw him on the night of October 1, 2009 and called it in, including his license plate number. He was arrested, with his most serious charge being breaking into a house and choking a fifteen-year-old girl in the middle of the night. He’s currently being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

Critic: One thing this article doesn’t do is explain the second charge of being a peeping Tom, though it is mentioned. Another thing wrong with this article is its need for spell checkin. In on instance, the author wrote “man man” is sequence, when only one “man” is necessary. From the context surrounding this occurrence, it would seem the author meant “the man,” not “man man.” At the end, the article includes a phone number, but not an area code. While locals are most likely the only ones to be reading this and calling in, it is bad form to leave out a phone number’s area code, especially considering the fact many cell phone require the caller to include the area code of their call.

Free Flu Shots set for Tomorrow

October 9, 2009
By Portsia Smith and Jim Hall

SUMMARY:
Free Flu Shots are being given tomorrow in Fredericksburg Va at the fredericksburg health department 608 jackson St. Dr Roberto Canizares is sponsoring this event in memory of his wife that died from the Flu. He purchased 500 doses of the anti-Flu vaccine

CRITIQUE:
I definitely think that it was very generous of Dr. Canizares. He could be saving lives by donating to other less fortunate people.

Man held in assault, peeping Tom cases.

Title: Man held in assault, peeping Tom cases
Author: Keith Epps
Date: 10/9/09 (make up for last week)

Summary:
In Townsend Square, a suspect named Arcos-Gonzalez was charged with assault, peeping and indecent exposure. Apparently on August 17th a 15-year-old girl woke up and "found man man over her with his hands covering her mouth." The girl had scratches on her face, a torn shirt, and a throat bruise. A woman apparently reported about the man's car and they found Arcos-Gonzalez that way.

Critique:
This article should have properly been edited and looked at twice because they said "man man" and it made no sense and lost me, as the reader, while reading this article. Also, I don't think that sense they don't know for sure that it was this guy, they probably should have just said that there was a suspect. But I don't know how these things go. Besides the typo, the article was written well, but it really was straight information and most of it was the bare minimum and could have been layed out much better.

Good Samaritan deed makes woman a target.

Title: Good Samaritan deed makes woman a target
Author: Portsia Smith
Date: Friday 10/9/09

Summary:
This article is about a 66-year-old woman, Vanita Lemmon, that was getting gas when she overheard this man who sounded like he was out of money. She went over to offer him half of her money, but he said he needed all of it and gave her his GPS in exchange for the money. He also offered to do some landscaping for her, so he asked for her number and everything and called her one day. When she came home, she saw her house was broken into and that her jewelry was gone and later found out that the GPS was stolen from another lady. The man was caught, but now Mrs. Lemmon has bars on her doors because this man ruined the safety and sanctuary of her home. She went through all of this for doing a good deed.

Critique:
The man was obviously on the phone with someone who was bad people, or on the phone to pretend, but still. What if this man was into some bad stuff? The newpaper just put her name out there and his friends can find her. I don't think in cases like this that the name should be let out. The newspaper should make a conscious decision to leave it out. Also, I thought there was a good rhetorical ending of making the audience feel scared and cautious about helping anyone these days because they ended it with a scared quote from this woman about how she was duped. This quote can relate to everyone's who has been duped, because even as a teenager in Stafford, I've given money to someone that I thought needed help that ended up being a natural/regular at that kind of thing. Just shows you that you can't trust anyone any more.

Summary:
In Bakionur, Kazakhstan a billionaire circus blown (Guy Liliberte) and two other astronauts traveled in to space yesterday. The russian rocket shot off from the Bikur launch facility with its funny passengers aboard and happy. Lilaberte is the founder of Cirque du Soleil, a circus show in Canada. He plans to help raise awareness to the constant shrinking of the world's clean water sources.

Critique:
I found that the article could have gone a little deeper into what the story was really about. To me, it seemed that it just skimmed the top.

Free flu shots set for tomorrow

Free flu shots set for tomorrow
October 9, 2009
Portia Smith and Jim Hall

Free flu shots will be offered from 1-3 p.m. on October 10th, 2009 at the Fredericksburg Health Department. Dr. Roberto Canizares is sponsoring the clinic in mermory of his late wife. These shots are meant for the protection against the seasonal flu and not the swine flu. The clinic is open to everyone and will serve the people on a first-come-first-served basis.

The article is very short, concise, and to the point. Because the purpose of the article was to inform people about the shots and their locations, the author should not have included the personal note about the doctor and his late wife because it detracts from the main focus of the article.

County school absences double

County school absences double
October 2, 2009
Tracy Bell

The amount of absences in schools have increased. Some of these absences can be attributed to the H1N1 virus while the rest can be accredited to various other things like doctor's or dentist appointments. Schoola however will not close due to a small amount of H1N1 cases but if the virus spreads vastly then closing the county schools will be considered. Parents should keep their children hom from school if they have a fever and are contagious. In the near future, the country schools will be hosting flu shot clinics. Hygenic practices should be observed to help decrease the spread of viruses and bacteria in schools.

This article is a little misleading because the title makes it seem like it would mainly focus on the absences but in reality the article mainly focuses on the N1H1 virus and the steps schools are taking to prevent it. The title should have included some mention of the real focus of the article.

Scammer given six months in prison--October 1, 2009--By Keith Epps

Summary: John J. Frank pleaded guilty on Tuesday, receiving six months in prison. On July 16, he conned and 89-year-old resident of Stafford county out of $2,500, then returned the next day along with some friends. While he distracted the victim, two of his friends broke in. A struggle later ensued and the victim pulled a gun on the robbers, forcing them out of his house. Frank and his accomplices were caught later that day by police.

Critic: One thing this article doesn't mention is what part the third accomplice played. This article also does not use any exact quotes that require quotation marks. The article does not explain the charge of abduction by force, even though it is the first listed against Frank. Similarly, it does not list what Frank's accomplices are charged with.

Nursing home team gives dogs a fair shot—September 25, 2009—By: Edie Gross

Summary: The Fancy Friends 4-H dog club brought their dogs to the Heritage Hall last Saturday to prepare them for tomorrow’s competition. One of their members uses a motorized wheelchair and to get their dogs to used to being around these wheelchairs, they brought their dogs to the Heritage Hall to work alongside the residents in motorized wheelchairs for the day.

Critic: The article uses numerous quotes but many aren’t inside quotation marks, which makes it difficult to tell what is quote and what isn’t. It also leaves the reader questioning whether the non-quotation marked quotes are accurate as some quotes are contained within quotation marks. The paragraph length also changes, with paragraphs on the first page being mostly one sentence paragraphs and ones on the inside averaging two to three sentences each. The author’s phraseology could use some work as sentences are constantly bouncing all over the place, interrupting the flow.

BEATINGS

Title: Two more jailed in Spotsy teen beating
Author: Pamela Gould
Date: Friday, September 25, 2009

Summary:
Two teens involved in a Spotsy teen beating recorded on camera are sentenced and jailed. Part of their sentence involves paying 1/9th of a part of the medical bills for the brain damage the victim had taken. A total of nine people were involved in this beating, and according to one of the arrested men, after the first punch which seemed joke-like, everything went out of control.

Critique:
The article put a chart of quotes and what sentence the arrested men were sentenced to, so basically the entire article is summarized in this one chart. Possibly, the person should have just used the chart, or added more information that was not on the chart. The chart seems awkwardly placed, though, and there is no picture pertaining to the article on the front page, and it is the first story on the first page so you would think you would have a picture.

Swine flu Vaccine Alexis Brana

HHS: Swine flu vaccine arrives in 2 weeks
September 25, 2009
By the Associated Press

More swine flu vaccine will be available soon. Most of it will be in the nasal spray form, called FluMist. After that the shots will be more available. The government wants people to get the vaccine if they can. Healthy people should get the nasal spray and unhealthy people should get the shot. The vaccine will be free because the government paid for it but some companies might charge a fee for administering the shot.

This article is very informal and uses commonplace words. The language of the article is very informative and states the purpose upfront. The article could have been placed in a better location because where it is currently place is hard to find.

Murder trial gets under way for a second time—September 10, 2009—by Keith Epps

Murder trial gets under way for a second time—September 10, 2009—by Keith Epps

This article explains about how Toronto Eura's second trial began the previous day after a mistrial in June due to an impartial juror. It also explains his charge of first degree murder for killing Jamiar Ellis over a woman. The article itself is small, but long enough to necessitate a continuation onto the back page. Each sentence is its own paragraph, which gives the article an appealing appearance. The article flows in a logical manner, from starting with the current news of the start of Eura's second trial, to why he needed a new trial, to what's happening so far in this trail, to the case itself. However, it says that Eura's first judge was Judge Gordon Willis and the person who positively identified Eura as the killer is a Jeffrey Willis, with no mention of whether they're related or not. It also concludes with a statement about heavy security at the city courthouse, as it was at the first trial, a seemingly random statement as security was mentioned no where else in the entire article.

Those are some big Dinosaurs!

Those are some big Dinosaurs!
September 10th, 2009 (issue date)
Article by: Craig Shulin

Summary: BBC has come out with a tour called 'Walking with Dinosaurs: the live experience"- a show featuring extremely realisitc dinosaurs that reach up to heights of 37 feet tall and 72 feet long! The show is helf at the verizon center in Washington D.C. from september 16th-20th with ticket prices ranging from $19.50 to $49.50. With dinosaurs of that immesnse size, it takes three people to operate just one of them. Previous visitors state that the snesatiton of watching the show is very much realistic, and that it is an exciting thing to see. Besides the giant dinosaurs, there are also 'baby' dinosaurs- operated by extremely strong performers; for each suit weighs about 80 pounds or more.

Critique: I felt the article was written fairly well, the only negative I would have to say about it was that I feel the writer should have written more about what other exhibits were in the show. For me, it felt that even though the article was based around the dinosaurs- seeing as to the article mentioned the show itself, I find that more information about what else the show had to offer would have made the article a little more interesting. However, in the same sense, I feel that the way the author wrote and described the dinosaur exhibit was still interesting as well as somewhat educational.

I think this is a better way to solve evictions, other than just shoving families on the streets. It also keeps people off the streets and out of trouble.

Murder Trial

Title:Murder trail gets under way for a second time
By:Keith Epps
Published:Sptember 10,2009

Summary: Toronto Epps is being on trial for the second time in Fredricksburg. He is on tiral for killing 21-year-old Jamair Ellis in a parking lot with a .380-caliber handgun. The shots were fired over some woman issues. The woman, Shaunice Weldon used to date Jamair and she had saw him in the parking lot about 1:25 going to a motel with her boyfrined, Toronto. Jamair had talked to Shaunice and Toronto in a car but then shots were fired. There was a witness that saw Toronto fire at Jamair which killed him. When Toronto was called to the stand at the tiral, he had said that he was in Dumfries with his wife watching the movie "Hancock", the time of the shooting. Toronto has denied the statement that he had killed Jamair and the defense attorney had said there was PCP found in Jamair's body.

Commentary: In this article the writer doesn't exactly tell you when the shooting began. They also should have talked more about when the first trial was and why the first trail didn't work. Another thing is that they went off topic and didn't say what happened over the second trial.

Wiggle Worms

Title: Where Businesses go for a Test Drive
By: Cathy Jett
Date: September 10, 2009

Summary: Wiggle Worms is a program ran by Leslie Fischer and Chrissy Gibbs (my first grade teacher) and how they have signed a year lease to run Wiggle Worms in the Spotsylvania Towne Center. The program wishes to expand once they figure out how successful the program is after about a year.

Commentary: I think the article should have focused more on the Wiggle Worms program because for some reason they branched off and started talking about other people's businesses for like a small segment. If they wanted to talk about something other than the program, they should have made a smoother tradition and wrote more about the other businesses in the area.

Time to thin out the 'time-biders'

September 10th, 2009. By Cheryl Hall.

Years ago young people in the job market would just leave the job if they were not happy with it. But now that the economy has declined and people are desperate for work, they are sucking up their dislikes for their job and keeping it. This forms a workforce that is simply biding their time and not interested in their jobs because they are just there. This leads to a decline in imganitive ideas and productivity.

This article has very good diction and includes tantilating words such as "cohort." The use of alot of different abbreviations made it hard to follow sometimes. Overall this was an informative, well written article.
